Welcome to the Wirnet™ i-series wiki

This wiki is dedicated to Kerlink LoRa gateways with KerOS firmware since v4.x.

Gateways supported by KerOS firmware are:

  • Wirnet™ iBTS (since KerOS firmware v4.0)
  • Wirnet™ iFemtoCell (since KerOS firmware v4.0)
  • Wirnet™ iStation (since KerOS firmware v4.1)
  • Wirnet™ iZeptoCell Ethernet (since KerOS firmware v5.x)

Compatibility matrix

KerOS firmware version Semtech Packet Forwarder (SPF) Common Packet Forwarder (CPF)
Since 4.x Not tested: Click here to get the HAL for compilation Compatible
3.x and lower Compatible Not compatible

Before KerOS firmware release v4.x, Kerlink provided pre-compiled Semtech packet forwarder (SPF). Since KerOS firmware release v4.x, only the pre-compiled Common packet forwarder (CPF) is provided, pre-compiled SPF are no more compatible.

For Wirnet iBTS with firmware release v3.x or v2.x (before v4.0), please refer to old Wirnet™ iBTS wiki.
For Wirnet iFemtoCell with firmware release v3.x (before v4.0), please refer to old Wirnet™ iFemtoCell wiki.

What is the purpose of Wirnet iBTS gateway?

The Wirnet iBTS IoT gateway is a robust, performant and highly scalable outdoor LoRaWAN gateway for smart IoT network.

Its carrier-grade conception offers powerful embedded processing capabilities, secure design, advanced remote monitoring options, and enhanced radio network configuration, easy to operate even for non-telecom users. Already widely deployed worldwide to power tier one operators’ networks, it is available in most global unlicensed frequency bands (like ISM).

The Wirnet iBTS standard allows flexible scalability, through modularity and antenna diversity, to simultaneously improve uplink receiver performance (Rx) and increase transmission downlink capacity (Tx).

The Wirnet iBTS Compact version will be the perfect match for operators and enterprises looking for a turnkey solution, offering first a light and compact form-factor. Il will simplify installation with its built-in mono or dual-WAN backhaul and integrated antennas for GPS receiver and 2G/3G/4G cellular modem.

This LoRaWAN gateway is fully compatible with LoRa® native sensors geolocation and can be remotely monitored and managed with Kerlink network operations solutions, the Wanesy Management Center.

What is the purpose of Wirnet iFemtoCell gateway?

The Wirnet iFemtoCell is a smart, configurable and performant indoor LoRaWAN gateway for smart IoT network.

Based on LoRa® technology, this gateway is perfectly designed for indoor public network extension (additional coverage in buildings to densify public network availability and continuity of service) or for ad-hoc indoor private coverage, like manufacturing, logistics or industrial sites requiring continuous connectivity for their IoT applications.

Available in most global unlicensed frequency bands (like ISM ones), this cost-effective gateway is proposed through a compact and full featured casing. Easy to configure, it offers multiple options for backhaul like Ethernet, WiFi or WWAN.

Used as a hub to connect end devices, it can power various in-building enterprise applications like assets monitoring, energy consumption control, security enforcement or any other operation-critical data collection in various environments (buildings, factory, industrial sites, farms, harbors, airports, mines…).

This LoRaWAN gateway leverages the same successful LoRa® RF technical design as its carrier-grade predecessor, the Wirnet Station, and offers high performance for very deep indoor coverage in demanding environments (basement, underground, parking, elevators shafts…) to connect energy meters, parking sensors or equipment actuators.

This long-range and low-power gateway offers LoRa® demodulators over 9 channels and comes with exclusive features for its remote monitoring and management with Kerlink network operations solutions, the Wanesy Management Center.

The Wirnet iFemtoCell is also compatible with the Wanesy Small Private Network solution to deploy standalone and self-operating LoRaWAN private network.

What is the purpose of Wirnet iStation gateway?

The Wirnet iStation is the ideal gateway to support your smart city, smart industry or any other smart project combining simplicity of installation and superior technical characteristics.

What is the purpose of Wirnet iFemtocell-Evolution gateway?

The Wirnet iFemtoCell-evolution is the ideal gateway to support you in your smart city, smart building or every smart project that requests dedicated indoor coverage and/or network densification, providing both a unique superior coverage and operational excellence with an internal 3G/4G backhaul.

What is the purpose of Wirnet iZeptoCell gateway?

The Wirnet™ iZeptoCell Ethernet is the ideal gateway to support you in your smart city, smart building or every smart project that requests dedicated indoor coverage and/or network densification, providing both a unique superior LoRa® coverage and operational excellence with Ethernet backhaul.

What is KerOS?

KerOS is the name of the operating system running on Wirnet i-series gateways. It is a Linux OS developed by Kerlink working on ARM architecture (freescale i.MX 6SoloX processor).
Keros is mainly based on open source applications (for example Busybox).
Kerlink provides frequent firmware/packages upgrades. The SDK is not available for KerOS (a user cannot rebuild KerOS). Cross-toolchain, libraries and header compatible with KerOS are provided in this wiki.

LoRa network topology

The following scheme describes how the Kerlink Wirnet gateways are working on a LoRa network:

The classical communication case is that LoRa end-devices emit frames and open short reception windows after the emission.

  • The gateway receives the frames and forwards them to a predefined LNS (LoRa Network Server).
  • The LNS may acknowledge or send a frame carrying a payload during one of the end-device's reception windows. The LNS records the data and the meta-data associated to the frame: payload, timestamp, radiofrequency data (band frequency, SNR, etc…).

The gateway can be connected to an IP network over:

  • Ethernet.
  • Cellular.
  • Wi-Fi (Wirnet iFemtoCell only).

The gateway connection to the IP network is used to:

  • Configure the gateway.
  • Update the gateway.
  • Get the logs.

These features are accessible through the following services:

  • Remote connection (SSH).
  • Remote SFTP access.
  • HTTPS REST API.
  • SMS.
  • USB flash drive.

What is LoRa?

LoRa is an acronym for Long Range. It is a technology dedicated to the Internet of Things (IoT).
LoRa opers on Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) and uses Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands.
